Lots of art, some cool toys, and a great panel with Darwyn Cooke (The Hunter, his latest book, is awesome ). While we were standing in line to enter the con, we saw a guy with this little girl dressed up as Hawk Girl. Then, in my brain, I overheard this imaginary conversation. In my brain.

Recently, the Atlantic Book Awards took place in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Much to my surprise, the kind judges there decided to honor me with the Lillian Shepherd Memorial Award for Excellence in Illustration for What Colour is the Ocean? I’d just like the thank Gary Collins and Maggie Rose Parsons for writing the book and for allowing me to be a part of the project. I’d also like to thank everyone at Flanker press for publishing the book and taking such care with the final product.

So, thanks to everyone involved. I really appreciate the award. You can see more about the Atlantic Book awards here. Also, you can get some info on the book itself, the authors, and the publisher over at the flanker press webpage: www.flankerpress.com

So this is what my webpage looks like. I’ve been really busy with my new job for the last few months and I’ve really neglected this blog space ( not to mention twitter ). I’m hoping to get back on track with some new images and some updates about the work I’ve been doing. There may even be a new video page appearing in the future. Keep your eyes peeled!

Also, I’ve been living in Toronto now for a few months and I must admit that I’m enjoying the city quite a bit. I’m especially fond of walking passed the christmas window displays. High-end fashion stores make creepy displays. Penguins are cute, penguin-human hybrids with dead stares are unnerving.

Last year at this time I would have been on my way to the San Diego Comic-con, but it’s just too far to travel without a good reason for going. Hopefully next year I’ll have my very own book to promote ( Last year was Chopper Zombie ).

All movies are essentially artificial, but in this case each shot needs to be tailored to either highlight or obfuscate the unreality of the situation. It’s alot more planning than I’m used to, but it’s fun to pre-visualize everything before even setting up a tripod.

A few nights ago I was walking through a park, taking some photos, when I noticed that the ducks in the duck pond were swimming around. This was 4:30 in the morning. When do ducks sleep? They weren’t exactly lively, but they were definately quacking and whatnot. Maybe it was just some bad apples.

Speaking of muppets, I’ve been drawing them quite a bit and it’s actually a really interesting challenge. Once you start really paying attention to the Muppets you’ll notice that most of them have frozen expressions. Almost all of the personality is sold through the voice and the physical performance. I’ve been trying to capture the expressiveness of the characters without altering the facial expressions. I want to draw muppets, not cartoon versions of muppets. If that makes sense. Hopefully in the not too distant future you’ll get to see some of my efforts.
